Including your children in your elderly care plan for your aging loved ones is a fantastic way to encourage a closer, more bonded relationship between the generations, boost mental and emotional health for everyone in the family, and allow the generations to learn and benefit from each other. It is also a wonderful way for you to be able to spend more time with your aging loved ones as well as your children so that you do not feel like you are having to divide your time among the family or miss anything.

One of the ways for you to enhance your multigenerational care days during your elderly care journey is to offer crafts and activities. These activities provide structure to the day so that everyone has a focus and you do not feel like your loved ones are bored or not enjoying their time together. Crafts and activities also stimulate the mind for improved cognitive processing, memory skills, and critical thinking.

This activity is perfect for you to do with your aging parents and your children because it is easily modifiable for a wide range of child ages, meaning your entire family can enjoy it together. Invite your parents’ elderly health care services provider to get in on the fun so she can feel more like part of the family and create a more bonded and trusting relationship with all of the members of the family.

The colored foam is fast and easy to make, and extremely inexpensive, so you can continue to make as much as your parents and children want as they play. The only special equipment you need is a foaming soap bottle. Reuse the ones that come with foaming hand soap from the local bath and body shop after using up all the soap, or find them for sale through soap making supply companies.

What You’ll Need

• Empty foaming hand wash bottles

• Dish liquid or liquid hand soap

• Water

• Food coloring
What to Do

• Squeeze enough dish liquid or liquid hand soap into the bottle to coat the bottom of the bottle with a layer that completely covers the bottom but is not too thick

• Add in several drops of food coloring in your chosen color. The more drops you add, the darker the foam will be, so experiment with different amounts of food coloring and blends of colors to create your own custom shades

• Fill the bottle most of the way with water

• Insert the top with the tube going through the center of the water

• Shake lightly to incorporate the food coloring

• You can now depress the plunger of the lid and squirt out fun non-toxic colored foam
Keep in mind that food coloring stains surfaces so this is a project best done outside to enjoy the pleasant fall weather and while wearing play clothing you do not mind getting splattered. For an extra fun afternoon, use your foam to create special family crafts just by giving each person a white T-shirt. While they play with the foam, it will stain the shirt, leaving designs, handprints, and drips that create a unique colored pattern and a lasting memory.
