Elderly Care in Fishers, IN – 2nd Week of September is National Waffle Week

National Waffle Week occurs in the second week of September. This is a great opportunity to try out some new and exciting recipes for waffles. Even if waffles haven’t been a highlight of your diet in the past, now is the perfect time to learn how to incorporate these tasty and inexpensive delights into your weekly menu. And they aren’t limited to just breakfast food either!

With September being National Breakfast Month, it’s only fitting that some popular breakfast foods are also highlighted during this month. For example, September 2nd to 8th is devoted to waffles and International Bacon Day is the Saturday before Labor Day. Paired together these two breakfast foods could be part of an all-American breakfast menu.

History of Waffles in America

Believe it or not, there’s evidence that waffles have been sold on the side of the street ever since 1603, but they first came to the Americas by way of Dutch immigrants moving into New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania 4 centuries ago. In those early days, the waffle iron was made from cast iron and hinged to open. It was place over an open fire.

Later in the 1800s, stove-top waffle irons made an appearance. By 1911 the General Electric Company had a prototype in development for the world’s first waffle iron run by electricity. Today, America’s love for waffles has expanded such that most homes have their own electric waffle maker.

Some interesting ways to eat waffles

  1. Use a waffle as a “wrap” and fill it with cooked sausages and scrambled eggs. Dip in syrup and eat warm.
  2. Top a hot crispy waffle with a slice of cheese and some taco fillings. Roll up and enjoy with salsa on the side.
  3. Make waffles with cornmeal. Wrap around a hotdog and top with ketchup.
  4. Top a hot waffle with a fruied egg and some mango salsa
  5. Spoon some ice cream onto a hot waffle and sprinkle with fresh blueberries. Eat right away while the waffle is still hot and the ice cream is still cold.
