Each year, Great Care joins advocacy groups, doctors, businesses, and community partners in increasing outreach and wellness during Men’s Health Month. June is dedicated to awareness, prevention and education for boys and men.
“As is women’s health, men’s health is a priority at Great Care,” says Great Care Founder and CEO Julie Sullivan. “But men’s health takes on a special awareness regarding specific health concerns, frequency of doctor visits, health-related habits, the difference in symptoms, and medical care required.”
Darryl Davidson, Director of Men’s Health for the Northwest Health Center in Milwaukee, agrees.
“Compared to similarly-aged women, men are less likely to have a regular doctor and health insurance and are more likely to put off routine checkups or delay seeing a health provider after experiencing symptoms,” he said. “This month is a reminder to talk to health professionals and to learn about important screenings that assist with finding conditions before they get worse.”
Through Men’s Health Month, health screenings, outreach efforts such as the #WearBlue campaign, and expert medical presentations happen throughout June to educate men on taking better care of their health.
“There is a silent health crisis in America. It’s that fact that, on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women,” says Dr. David Gremillion of the Men’s Health Network.
Starting June 13 and running through Father’s Day on Sunday, June 19, Men’s Health Week is a special awareness period recognized by Congress, with a goal for better healthoutcomes and longer life expectancy. During this time, health care professionals, private corporations, faith-based organizations, government agencies, and other interested groups plan activities that focus on the health and well-being of boys, men, and their families.
“It’s been exciting to watch the momentum for Men’s Health Month grow every single year,” says Brandon Leonard, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Men’s Health Network. “The key to making this a successful awareness period has been working with so many partners around the country – and the world – who are dedicated to improving the health of men, boys and families. We have also seen tremendous buy-in from policymakers and leaders at the local, state and federal level for raising awareness of male health.”
People are invited to celebrate Wear Blue Friday, the Friday before Father’s Day, by donning the color. The awareness continues throughout the month, as Congress joins the celebration with a Congressional Workout, planned for June 22.
