Each year, Great Care anticipates the fun months of summer. Dips in the pool, slices of watermelon, and mason jars of lemonade are just a few of our favorite summer things. Staying cool and hydrated are two of the most important reminders for seniors in the summer.
In fact, the Alzheimer’s Association suggests avoiding heat-related stress by staying hydrated and following doctor’s orders.
“Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages,” says the Association. “If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink when the weather is hot. Also, avoid extremely cold liquids because they can cause cramps.”
The Alzheimer’s Association’s prevention tips also include resting, taking a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath, and wearing lightweight clothing. Also:
• “If possible, remain indoors in the heat of the day. Do not engage in strenuous activities.
• If possible, seek an air-conditioned environment. (If you don’t have air conditioning, consider visiting an air-conditioned shopping mall or public library to cool off.)”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reminds us that anyone aged 65 years or older are more prone to heat-related health problems. The CDC says older adults are more prone to heat stress because they do not adjust as well as young people to sudden changes in temperature. Also:
- “They are more likely to have a chronic medical condition that changes normal body responses to heat.
- They are more likely to take prescription medicines that affect the body’s ability to control its temperature or sweat.”
The CDC says caregivers should remember to keep a close eye on those in their care by visiting them at least twice a day, and asking themselves these questions:
- Are they drinking enough water?
- Do they have access to air conditioning?
- Do they know how to keep cool?
- Do they show any signs of heat stress?
