Caregivers-in-Fishers-INIn your role as a part of the sandwich generation caring for both your adult parents and your children, you are likely to come across a variety of stains. While these stains can be frustrating, you do not have to just accept them as part of your wardrobe, furnishings, or home décor. With a few simple tips and tricks, you can remove the stains without devoting all of the free time in your caregiver journey to combating them.

Whether you have a few lingering spots from holiday celebrations that you want to make sure you get rid of before the new year, or you just encounter stains on a frequent basis and want to be able to keep them at bay, try these tips and tricks for removing these stains effectively and efficiently:

• Red wine. Red wine stains are not only some of the most frustrating and lingering of stains, but they are also some of the most common after the holiday season. If you discover some red wine splatters on your parents’ carpet, pour white wine over them and then cover the spots with thick paste made from baking soda and water. Allow the paste to sit for a few hours and then wash the carpet.

• Grease. Just like you remove grease from your dishes using dish liquid, you can remove stains made from cooking oil using the same liquid. Dawn brand has the highest level of surfactants, making it highly effective at removing these types of stains.

• Sweat. Sweat stains are unsightly and can make you want to throw away clothing. Extend the life of your parents’ wardrobe by combining crushed aspirin tablets, cream of tartar, and warm water to create a paste. Apply the paste to the stained area and allow it to sit for twenty minutes before rinsing with warm water and washing normally. You can help to avoid future sweat stains by spraying clothing that has been sweat on with lemon juice. The natural acids in the juice will prevent the yellow discoloration in the fabric.

• Blood. Blood stains are particularly lasting and can happen as easily as getting a paper cut while opening your parents’ mail or accidentally cutting yourself shaving. These stains are easiest to remove when they are still fresh and you can get the blood out by soaking the area in cold water and ammonia for twenty minutes before washing. If the stain has set, however, use warm water to dampen the stain and sprinkle unseasoned meat tenderizer over it to create a paste. Cover the area with a damp paper towel and leave overnight. Make sure that the paper towel stays damp throughout the soaking process. Rinse with water and ammonia and then wash.

It is almost always easier to get stains out before they set, so make it a point to start stain removal efforts when the spill or mark is wet if possible. Remember not to rub, grind, or pound the stains as these actions will only work the stain deeper into the fibers.
