The remarkable human body is constantly replacing dead skin cells with new ones. As we age this process tends to slow down; the skin becomes drier and thinner. This makes over-exposure to the sun a critical situation for senior skin. The risks of developing skin cancer can be avoided if precautions are observed.
Getting some sunshine and fresh air, especially in good weather, is a brilliant idea for seniors. The clean fresh oxygen and beautiful aroma of green plants and flowers is very healthy, as is a certain amount of the sun’s rays directly on the skin for the production of vitamin D. However, there needs to be a balance between enjoying the sunshine and protecting their delicate skin.
Staying safe in the sunshine
- Have your elder wear a hat. It shades their face as well as the back of their neck.
- Make sure there is a shady spot to move them into if the sun get too warm
- Sunscreen should be worn if staying in the sun for an extended time
- Medications they are taking may make them more sensitive to the sun. Check with their doctor
- Keep them hydrated and always have water and healthy juices on hand to drink. Don’t use soft drinks or alcohol; both of them have a dehydrating effect!
- The sun is usually the strongest between 10:00am to 4:00pm. They will need sunscreen during this time frame as well as shade. Don’t keep them out too long in the hottest part of the day
- They may not feel a sunburn coming on until it’s too late. Monitor them for the amount of time they’ve been in the sun. Always use sunscreen if in doubt.
It’s important for seniors to be included in some of the summer outdoor activities, especially family events such as family reunions. Since it’s such a busy time with visiting, planning, helping with food etc. consider getting your loved one a caregiver from an in-home care service to accompany them on these types of outings. Having someone with no other distractions to make sure their needs are taken care of will take a load of worry off your mind.
