Home Care Services in Zionsville, IN – Don’t Let those Holiday Staples Go to Waste After the Big Meal!
Thanksgiving is just around the corner now and if an elderly person who relies on home care services is planning on visiting family, enjoying a nice turkey dinner, or they are going to host this holiday event, more often than not there will be a hearty amount of leftovers.
Even if the elderly individual is going to spend the day alone or with the in home care service provider, turkey, cranberries, stuffing, and gravy are the quintessential staples of Thanksgiving. They should have the opportunity to enjoy a nice, robust meal on this day, and to give thanks for all that they have.
Of course, if they make a hearty meal, there are going to be leftovers, in most likelihood. It shouldn’t go to waste. There are a few things that they can do with those leftovers, if they are so inclined.
1. Make some great tasting sandwiches for the next few days.
There’s not much better than wholesome, fresh turkey to make a sandwich. Placing some slices on wheat or whole grain bread, spread a little dash of mayonnaise or stuffing with gravy, and you could have a nice hot or cold sandwich for lunches.
2. Offer some to those in need.
If the elderly individual anticipates having leftovers, they may be able to offer leftovers to those in need. Not many shelters will accept any food that has already been opened, but there may be members of a church that the senior attends who may be down on their luck and could use some good leftovers.
3. Stew.
Most stews tend to be made from beef or chicken, but turkey can add some wonderful flavor. You can also consider adding in stuffing to season the taste of the stew.
4. Invite friends over for an ‘after T-Day’ meal.
If the elderly individual has friends or neighbors who might not get together with family or friends for Thanksgiving, the senior could consider inviting them over on Friday or Saturday to enjoy the leftovers.
Some people will have a tendency to grow tired of turkey not long after Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t have to happen if the senior who requires home care services plans ahead and knows what he or she is going to do with the leftovers. This Thanksgiving, make sure that those leftovers are enjoyed and don’t go to waste.
